Walking down a Lagos street I could hear Fela’s music bellowing on the loudspeakers, while the smooth rhythms of Sunny Ade’s Juju beats echoed in the distance. The National Theater in Lagos set the stage for many young Nigerian musicians to be influenced by the showmanship of touring African-American pop groups.
